Sophie Muller – In her body of work, Sofie Muller (born in 1974, Ghent, Belgium) focusses on the core of ‘La Condition Humaine’. With installations & sculptures, completed with work on paper and alabaster, she researches our deepest and darkest psyche while using the human body as a vehicle to express the condition of the soul. Originating from a family of antique dealers, the artist learned from a young age to use craftmanship as an important benchmark. Collecting art and curiosa herself, she has a specific fascination for objects revolving around human anatomy, medical instruments, and laboratory equipment, which she often incorporates into her work. Her oeuvre depicts her urge for perfection and craftmanship, which coincides with the rather brute elements of inter trauma in some of her pieces. Visualizing man in all his vulnerability, Sofie Muller creates a universal portrait of us, mankind. Sofie Muller lives and works in Ghent, Belgium. She is represented by gallery Geukens & De Vil. In 2018, her oeuvre was rewarded with the prestigious prize ‘Laureate of the Academy’ by the Royal Academy of Belgium for Science & Art. She presented her work in Belgian institutes (MHKA, Antwerp; KMSK, Antwerp; Dr. Guislain Museum, Ghent; C-Mine, Genk; FeliXart Museum, Drogenbos) and various exhibitions abroad (Fox Jensen, Sydney; Proyectos Monclova, Mexico-City; Galeria Biala, Lublin; National Gallery of Art, Sopot; Museum Of Contemporary Art, Krakow; Michaela Stock, Vienna; Palazzo Fortuny, Venice; Fondation Francès, Senlis; Kunstmuseum Solingen; Kunsthalle Nürnberg; Chelsea Art Museum, New York and many others).
