Tomasz Domański – born in 1962 in Giżycko. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, where he obtained his diploma in sculpture in 1993 and defended his doctoral thesis in 2003, the subject of which was ephemeral sculpture as a relative monument. He is the author of a series of ephemeral installations under the common title ‘Monuments of Time 1992-2022’ as well as sculptures, installations, objects, performances, drawings and photographs. The artist works mostly with natural materials: water, ice, fire, wood, straw, ash, metal, using processes inherent to them. He creates films and animations as integral elements of many works.
He was awarded a scholarship from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in 1995-96. He is a five-time grantee of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and of many foundations and institutions, including twice the Pollock-Krasner from New York, the Laurenz Foundation from Basel, twice the Montag Stiftung Bildende Kunst from Bonn, CEC ArtsLink from New York, twice UNESCO-Aschberg from Paris, KulturKontakt from Vienna, the Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation from Berlin, Adolph and Esther Gottlieb from New York. In 1997 he was nominated for the ‘Polityka’ Passports. In the same year, he represented Poland at the 9th Art Triennale in New Delhi.
He has realised his projects and exhibitions in, among others, Poland, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, USA, Canada, India, Alaska, Hong Kong or Korea. He has participated in fifty solo exhibitions and over one hundred and fifty group exhibitions.
Tomasz Domański’s works can be found, among others, in the collections of such institutions as the Lower Silesian Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Wrocław, the National Museum in Wrocław, the Wroclaw Contemporary Museum, the Polish Sculpture Centre in Orońsko.
Since 2002, in the village of Komorowice in Lower Silesia, the author has been realising a long-term project in which the idea of ephemerality is reflected in the dynamic structure of a symbiotic sculpture garden – ‘Wieżogród / TowerTopia’.
